sparks rowSrinagar, Apr 14 (PTI) The man, who was seen tied to an army jeep in a shocking video shot during the poll-day violence in Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency on April 9, apparently as a shield against stone-pelting protesters, has been identified as Farooq Dar.Officials investigating the matter under instructions from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said Dar is a resident of Sitaharaan village in Khag tehsil of Budgam district in central Kashmir and the army unit involved is 53 Rashtriya Rifles. The video, which triggered a public outcry in the restive Kashmir valley, prompted the civil and army authorities to launch separate investigations.During the investigation, Dar was claimed to have said he was picked up when he was on way to his sisters house, where a bereavement had occurred, after casting his vote.He alleged he was picked up by an army contingent that wanted to enter Beerwah village with the polling staff and tied with ropes to the front of the vehicle, officials said. The video showed the thickset man sporting a beard strapped to the bonnet while seated on the stepney affixed to the bumper of the jeep. Dar claimed he was moved around 10-12 villages at the head of the convoy, which included vehicles with security personnel and polling staff, before being let off.Sources in the army claimed Dar was picked up from a “trouble spot” and was tied up for barely 100 metres before being released. comment Read more Think about it; everyone who regularly follows an English league team on the road, knows which respective sides of the Pennines Bradford and Bolton belong to and would be mortified to get Wolverhampton muddled up with West Bromwich. If their club plays in Europe, or they are aficionados of the international game, those supporters are similarly unlikely to suffer a brain freeze when it comes to separating Budapest from Bucharest. That duo will be in the news next summer when Hungary and Romania are two of the 12 countries hosting 24 teams and 51 matches at a strangely atomised Euro 2020. It is part of the tournament’s 60th birthday celebrations but the move away from one nation – or two at most – signals the sort of unfortunate timing that suggests football is, once again, behind the curve. All those contrails constantly crisscrossing an area stretching from Baku to Bilbao en route to the eventual denouement in London will surely seem indicative of a sport apparently too arrogantly self-important to bother itself about the climate emergency.Carbon-related concerns aside, common sense appears in short supply. At a moment when there is mounting worry surrounding certain European cities being overrun with tourists, it seems myopic to stage matches in three of the continent’s most rammed sightseeing locations: Amsterdam, Budapest and Rome.Admittedly there should be few such problems in slightly more off-the-beaten-track Bucharest, while things should really shift a full 180 degrees in Baku. With costs high and obtaining visas a bit of a rigmarole, tourists are few and far between. So rare, indeed, that it is surprisingly difficult to buy a commemorative postcard, let alone a T-shirt, in an Azerbaijani capital geared much more towards catering for the corporate types typically found pacing Uefa’s corridors of power. Were Greta Thunberg ever to face down those decision‑making suits, her pigtails would surely flap with righteous indignation at the giant carbon footprint symbolised by the telltale white vapour streams stretching behind zigzagging aircraft carrying teams, supporters and media between assorted Euro 2020 venues. For the moment at least, though, football’s all‑consuming appeal ensures that fans who might breezily condemn members of the royal family – think Harry and Meghan – for jaunting off to the Mediterranean on private aircraft, happily turn a blind eye to the game’s collective executive jet habit. As any plane spotter worth their salt knows, Arsenal’s infamous 14-minute charter flight from Luton to Norwich in 2015 merely represents the tip of the, er, iceberg.By 2026 – when a World Cup staged in Canada, the United States and Mexico will embrace countries comprising about 14% of the planet’s landmass – such hypocrisies may be less acceptable. Even the most ardent football evangelist might feel that spreading the game’s gospel from Montreal to Mexico City is no longer the modern equivalent of missionary work but simply way out of synch with the prevailing zeitgeist.A watershed beckons in 2022, when Qatar boasts of hosting the first carbon-neutral World Cup, all within a 31-mile radius of Doha. Of the eight grounds, the closest are three miles apart but integrated walking trails, cycle paths and a light railway join the dots, enabling fans to watch two games a day.Considering the stadiums are modular – assembled from easy-to-deconstruct shipping containers, ready for partial or entire dismantling, donation, export and rebuilding in impoverished countries – it all appears a sustainability nirvana. The irony is that there is also an awful lot not to like about Qatar – its well-documented role in the rise of Islamic extremist-fuelled terrorism, its treatment of expatriate labourers responsible for building the tournament infrastructure and a less than pristine human rights record.Purely in environmental terms, the blueprint of the first such showpiece staged in the Middle East not only looks miles ahead of the curve but a decent template for major 21st-century high-density sporting events.Caveats abound. Regardless of that sensitive, water-muddying, geopolitical backdrop, a month beneath Doha’s gentle winter sun may prove claustrophobically dull for some. Generally, though, an opportunity to get a proper feel for an entirely new culture and landscape is infinitely more rewarding than constantly shuttling between anonymous airport departure lounges and – increasingly – out-of-town stadiums.Rather than failing to even peek beneath the surface of fleetingly visited host cities, staying awhile invariably represents the difference between recalling a place as just another generic “anywheresville” and somewhere invested with meaning and memories. They feature clearly highlighted contours and country boundaries but the neatly printed place names that customarily adorn atlases and globes are missing. It is safe to assume that, asked to fill in the blanks and pinpoint specific towns and cities, a lot of people might make some embarrassingly bad guesses. According to a new Pew Research Center analysis which includes surveys in 34 countries, almost nine in ten Greeks believe their culture is superior to others, even though they recognise that “modern Greek people are not perfect”.The survey focused on religion, national identity and attitudes towards religious minorities. In terms of “cultural superiority” Greece sits at 89 per cent, Russia and Bulgaria at 69 per cent, Norway scored 58 per cent, Poland 55 per cent Italy, Austria and Portugal 47 per cent, UK and Hungary got 46 per cent.Less than half of Germans – a 45 per cent -Germans feel they are “better than other cultures”, 36 per cent of the people in France, in Sweden only a 26 per cent feels “superior” and in Spain 20 per cent gave that response.Their perception of “cultural superiority” as it is referred to in the study is not in regards to economic performance but rather connects to the glorious past of Ancient Greece. The majority of modern Hellenes – both in Greece and in the diaspora – perceive themselves to be direct descendants of the heroic or philosopher ancient Greeks and believe in “racial purity”.“When we were building the Parthenon, the others were on trees eating acorns”, many participants seemed to agree.Photo: Pew Research CenterMeanwhile, a whopping 76 per cent of the Greek that participated agred that “being a Christian and especially Orthodox is very important for being truly Greek”.“Although Greece has long been aligned with the West, it aligns more with Central and Eastern Europe than with Western Europe on religion, nativism and social issues,” writes Pew Research Center.“When it comes to public attitudes on religion, national identity and the place of religious minorities, Greeks, like their neighbors to the East, hold more nationalist and less accepting views than do Western Europeans”.“Greeks appear to recognise this,” the survey continues, “Seven-in-ten agree with the statement: ‘There is a conflict between our country’s traditional values and those of the West’. His pure emotions and vocal tones pushed several tracks onto the Billboard Hot 100 and his 2016 album, Nine Track Mind, finally delivered a full-length to devoted fans. Now, hear his latest single “Change.”The upcoming album that the track “Change” will appear on is called Voicenotes, named after Apple’s Voice Memo app that many songwriters rely on. Puth previously relied on it when he wrote and submitted a song demo for “See You Again” to the producers of Furious 7 for a tribute song to Paul Walker’s character in the movie franchise. In its final form, hardened by Wiz Khalifa’s rap, the song went to No. 1 and spent 12 non-consecutive weeks at that spot. Khalifa, Puth and “See You Again” were nominated at the 58th GRAMMY Awards for Song Of The Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written For Visual Media. News While few talents have a No. 1 hit before they turn 20, and still fewer achieve the lasting success of a true folk icon, the unlikely pairing of Puth and Taylor couldn’t have come at a better time. We can be sure many will sympathize with the power of the song’s outlook’s simplicity — valuing love and treating all people as equals. While “Change” is sure to attract attention, it might put some listeners into a sugar coma. For others, “Change” will be heard and taken to heart as simple truth. Indian Supreme CourtIndia’s Supreme Court on Thursday heard a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of “triple talaq” and to know whether it was fundamental to Islam.”We are going to decide the validity of triple talaq,” said chief justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, heading a constitution bench. He asked the parties concerned to focus on whether triple talaq was fundamental to Islamic religion. The chief justice said that petitioners and respondents would address the court on whether triple talaq was an enforceable fundamental right. The bench sought suggestions on the broad parameters of the directions the court may issue while deciding the validity of triple talaq.Other judges on the constitution bench are justice Kurian Joseph, justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, justice Uday Umesh Lalit and justice S Abdul Nazeer. The court said both sides would get two days each to argue their case. Thereafter, both sides would get a day each to submit rejoinders.Triple talaq is a practice under which a husband can verbally divorce his wife by uttering the word “talaq” thrice. This has been opposed by a section of the Muslim society while others say it cannot be changed as it is part of Muslim personal law.The Modi government wants triple talaq to go. The practice is not followed in many Muslim countries including Pakistan.
Buy artwork. Pick up a raffle ticket. Send promising young students to the United States. Not bad for a night’s work. It all goes down at the Costa Rican-North American Center in San Pedro on Wednesday night. For many young Ticos, no dream is more enticing than a chance to study in the U.S. There are plenty of prestigious schools in Costa Rica, but the U.S. offers a variety of schools and specialty majors that do not exist here. Yet the U.S. is expensive – according to the National Center for Education Statistics, undergraduates at public schools spend an average of $13,564 per academic year, never mind Ivy League students. You can help these dreams come true thanks to the Opportunity Fund, a collaboration between the Costa Rican-North American Center and Education USA, a study-abroad organization. Started in 2006, the fund distributes money to promising Costa Rican students who hope to enroll in a U.S. school. While the fund doesn’t pay the student’s full tuition or living expenses, it greases the wheels, covering visa applications, document translation, placement exams and transportation to the school, among other things. To raise money for the fund, the Center will host a benefit on Wednesday,Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m., in its San Pedro headquarters. The soiree will include raffles and an art auction, among other activities. Patrons can peruse and purchase the work of Costa Rican artists, who will donate a percentage of their revenue to the Opportunity Fund.More than 100 academic institutions in the U.S. have admitted Costa Rican students through the program. Last year’s recipients were Jimmy Rojas, who is now studying at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology, and José Ángel Rodriguez, who is attending Virginia Tech. This year’s selections are Jorge Isaac Sandoval and Joselina Chacón, who are still applying to schools. Stay in the loop to find out where they go. Facebook Comments No related posts.
