As we reach the “dog days of summer”, you might wonder what is going on at most D1 schools during this time of the year. Most schools will be doing the following 6 things. First of all, many of the athletes in football and basketball will be taking summer school classes to catch up to the regular college student. Some of these athletes will also be trying to get themselves eligible to play the coming season. All of them will be doing individual work on their weaknesses. Very few athletes are so good that they don’t have any weaknesses. While working out, they also are trying to get bigger, stronger, quicker, and more explosive. There is a lot of controversy among the medical field that some of these workouts lead to the increase in injuries that are so prevalent in athletics today. The final two things they are doing are working with the freshman class, which will be eligible this coming season. In fact, with early graduation, some of these athletes already have a semester of classes behind them. The final phase of summer training is recovering from injuries that they suffered during the past year. In just a few weeks the new college season will be in progress.
